WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump and Melania Trump will visit Poland and Denmark from Aug. 31 to Sept. 3, the White House said in a statement on Wednesday.

It said Trump and his wife “will attend commemorative ceremonies and visit memorial sites in Warsaw on Sept. 1, 2019, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the beginning of World War II.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Trump said he looked forward to visiting Poland. “I like the people,” he said.

Trump previously visited Poland in July 2017, a few months after taking office. The United States has agreed to boost the number of U.S. troops in Poland, a step sought by Warsaw, which fears potential aggression from Russia.

In Denmark, Trump “will participate in a series of bilateral meetings and meet with business leaders,” the White House said.

Trump’s visit is set for Sept. 2-3, the Danish prime minister’s office said.

“The U.S. is Denmark’s most important and strongest ally in NATO. Our soldiers stand shoulder by shoulder at the world’s hotspots and in the defense of Europe’s safety,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in a statement.

Trump has pressed NATO allies to spend more than 2 percent of their gross domestic product on defense. In January, Denmark said it would raise its military spending to 1.5 percent of GDP in 2023, up from 1.35 percent planned this year.
