WASHINGTON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - The Democratic-led U.S. House Judiciary Committee said on Thursday it subpoenaed President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, for public testimony as part of an investigation of the Trump presidency.
The committee, which was considering articles of impeachment against Trump, also served a subpoena to obtain testimony from former Trump White House aide Rick Dearborn, a former deputy chief of staff, the committee said in a statement.
Both men figured prominently in former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s description of efforts by Trump to pressure then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions to oversee the Mueller probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election and to direct it away from his 2016 presidential campaign.
“The committee intends to hold hearings and obtain testimony over the coming months as part of its efforts to hold the president accountable as we move forward with our investigation into obstruction, corruption and abuse of power by Trump and his associates,” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler said in a statement.
“This will help the committee determine whether to recommend articles of impeachment against the President or other ... remedies. No one is above the law.”
Mueller’s 448-page investigation report says Trump met Lewandowski one-on-one in the Oval Office on June 19, 2017, and dictated a message for Lewandowski to deliver to Sessions, that said the former attorney general should reverse his recusal from the Russia probe and shift the investigation toward future elections.
At a second meeting a month later, Trump asked about the status of the message and said Lewandowski, a private citizen, should “tell Sessions he was fired” if he would not meet with the former campaign manager, according to the Mueller report.
Lewandowski later gave Dearborn a typewritten version of the message and asked him to deliver it to Sessions, the Mueller report says. Dearborn did not deliver the message.
