Name Description

Yannis Stournaras

Mr. Yannis Stournaras has served as Governor of the Board of Directors of Bank of Greece since June 2014. He is Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics, University of Athens. He graduated from the Department of Economics, University of Athens in 1978. He obtained his post-graduate degrees (MPhil 1980, DPhil 1982) from the University of Oxford, where he also worked from 1982 to 1986 as a Research Fellow and Lecturer at St. Catherine’s College and as Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. Following his return to Greece he worked as a Special Advisor to the Ministry of Economy and Finance (1986-1989) on Public Enterprises and Incomes Policy issues, and to the Bank of Greece (1989-1994) on Monetary Policy issues. From 1994 to July 2000 he was Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors at the Ministry of Economy and Finance. In this capacity, he participated in the negotiations for the entry of Greece in the Economic and Monetary Union. He was Vice Chairman of the Public Gas Corporation (1994-1997) and a member of the Board of Directors of the Public Debt Management Office (1998-July 2000). From 2000 to 2004 he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Emporiki Bank and Vice Chairman of the Association of Greek Banks. From 2005 to August 2008 he was managing director of Kappa Securities. He served as Director General of the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE) (September 2009-June 2012) and as Minister of Development, Competitiveness and Shipping of the Interim Government (May-June 2012) and as a Minister of Finance (July 2012- June 2014).

Theodoros Mitrakos

Mr. Theodoros M. Mitrakos has served as Deputy Governor of the Board of Directors of Bank of Greece since March 2015. He graduated with honours from the Faculty of Economics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and holds a PhD in Economics from the Athens University of Economics and Business. Since 1997, he has worked as an Economist with the Economic Analysis and Research Department of the Bank of Greece. Over the past six years, he created and developed the Department’s Real Estate Market Analysis Section. Before joining the Bank of Greece, Mr. Mitrakos worked for the Centre of Planning and Economic Research – KEPE (1987-88) and for the National Accounts Department of the Hellenic Statistical Authority – ELSTAT (1989-97). In 2011 he was elected Associate Professor at Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences. As a Visiting Professor he has also taught in the post-graduate program of the University of the Peloponnese as well as courses in Business Administration and Organization Management at the Hellenic Open University. In 2010-2011, he served as vice-president of the Hellenic Public Real Estate Corporation. He has participated in many international conferences and has several years of research and teaching experience. He has published over 50 articles in international journals and in collective volumes. He has also co-authored five books, including “The Greek banking landscape and the international financial crisis”, “Structural change and banking employment”, and “Education and the labor market”, which won an award from the Academy of Athens. His research focus is on labor market issues, European and monetary policy, income distribution and the real estate market.

John Mourmouras

Mr. John (Iannis) Mourmouras serves as Deputy Governor of the Board of Directors of Bank of Greece. He is Deputy Governor with responsibilities pertaining to the implementation of monetary policy, global capital markets, payment and settlement systems, and bank resolution. He is also Chairman of the Financial Asset Management Committee, which is responsible for the Bank’s international investment portfolio. He served as Deputy Finance Minister of Greece (2011-2012) and was Chief Economic Advisor to the Greek Prime Minister, as well as Head of the PM’s Economic Office (2012-2014). He is Professor of Macroeconomics at the Department of Economics, University of Macedonia - Thessaloniki, Greece (he was unanimously elected to a Chair at the age of 36 in 2001). He previously held academic positions at well-known British universities (in London, Southampton, and Edinburgh) and was a Visiting Professor at US and European Universities. He holds a PhD from the University of London and is a graduate of the London School of Economics. He has published numerous research papers in established academic journals in the areas of monetary policy, central bank independence, open economy macroeconomics and growth theory. He is an expert on the Economic and Monetary Union in Europe and the author of three books on this topic. In the recent past, he has been invited to give a series of speeches and lectures on the European debt crisis, monetary policy and global markets in world-renowned universities and institutions, inter alia, Harvard University, Columbia University, LSE, Oxford University, National University of Singapore, Banca d’Italia, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the Council on Foreign Relations (New York), the Brookings Institution, the Institute of International Finance (Washington, D.C.), Bruegel Institute, Japan Center for Economic Research, OMFIF, Concordia, etc. He occasionally writes articles in international economic newspapers and magazines such as the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal, The Banker.
