Barnes & Noble Education, Inc., incorporated on July 5, 2012, is a contract operator of bookstores on college and university campuses across the United States and a provider of digital education services. The Company offers a support system, and a retail and digital learning experience for students. Through its subsidiary, Barnes & Noble College Booksellers, LLC. (Barnes & Noble College), the Company operates approximately 750 campus bookstores and the school-branded e-commerce sites for each store, serving over five million college students and their faculty across the nation. The Company offers a set of products and services to help students, faculty and administrators achieve their shared educational and social goals. As of April 30, 2016, the Company operated 751 stores across the nation.

The Company's suite of product offerings includes Textbook and Course Material Sales, Textbook and Course Material Rentals, General Merchandise, Trade, Digital Education and Brand Partnerships. Textbooks are a core product offering of its business. It provides students with textbook solutions and educates them about each format through various means. It offers textbooks on rent. The textbooks include custom course packs and adaptive learning materials, along with traditional textbooks. It also offers a buyout option to allow the customers to purchase the rented book at the end of the semester. General merchandise sales are generated in-store, on campus at sporting and other events, as well as online through school-branded e-commerce sites. Its stores feature collegiate and athletic apparel relating to a school and/or its athletic programs and other custom-branded school spirit products, technology, supplies and convenience items.

The Company also offers other merchandise, such as laptops and other technology products, notebooks, backpacks, school and dormitory supplies and related items. As of April 30, 2016, it operated 80 customized cafes, featuring Starbucks Coffee and 18 convenience stores, as well as grab-and-go options, including organic, vegan and gluten-free and ethnic fare for students on the move. In its stores located on various campuses, it carries a selection of trade, academic and reference books, along with educational toys and games, and schedule store events, such as author signings. Using the Company's LoudCloud platform, the Company offers a suite of digital content and learning materials to supplement its traditional products (textbooks and course materials). It enables educators to mix and author various forms of content, including eTextbooks and media, and provides them with adaptive analytics and assessment capabilities. It provides brands direct access to students who shop at the Company's stores. It operates as a media channel for these brands looking to target the college demographic.

The Company offers Platform Services, including FacultyEnlight, Campus Connect Technologies and LoudCloud Platform. FacultyEnlight is an online platform that manages content search, discovery and adoption by faculty on each campus. FacultyEnlight also provides the Company with a communication platform to connect with faculty directly. The Company's technology enables faculty to research and select, and enables students to find and purchase the course materials. Campus Connect Technologies platform includes registration integration, learning management system (LMS) integration, real-time financial aid platform, point of sale (POS) platform and course fee solution. The LoudCloud platform is a digital platform and analytics system that includes a courseware platform, a learning analytics platform, an eReading product and an LMS. Its software captures and analyzes key behavioral and performance metrics from students. Its module-based architecture allows for customization and the ability to support various educational models, and support additional capabilities, including competency-based learning and courseware development.

The Company competes with Akademos, Amazon.com, BBA Solutions, bn.com, Chegg.com, CourseSmart, eCampus, Follett Corporation, MBS Direct, Rafter, Apple, Blackboard and Google.
