The New York Times Company, incorporated on August 26, 1896, is a media company focused on creating, collecting and distributing news and information. The Company's principal business consists of distributing content generated by its newsroom through its print, Web and mobile platforms. In addition, it distributes selected content on third-party platforms. The Company includes newspapers, print and digital products and investments. The Company's businesses include newspapers, such as The New York Times (The Times); Websites, including NYTimes.com; mobile applications, including The Times' news applications, as well as interest-specific applications, such as NYT Cooking, Crossword and others, and related businesses, such as The Times news services division, product review and recommendation Websites The Wirecutter and The Sweethome, digital archive distribution, NYT Live (its live events business) and other products and services under The Times brand.
The Company's print newspapers are sold in the United States and around the world through individual home-delivery subscriptions, bulk subscriptions (by schools and hotels), and single-copy sales. All print home-delivery subscribers receive unlimited digital access. In addition to its news Websites and mobile applications, the Company has a range of Websites and mobile applications that are tailored to a range of interests, including NYT Cooking and its Crossword product. The Company has a portfolio of advertising products and services that it provides across print, Web and mobile platforms. Display advertising includes advertisers promoting products, services or brands, such as financial institutions, movie studios, department stores, and American and international fashion and technology. On its Web and mobile platforms, display advertising consists of banners, video, media and other interactive advertisements. Display advertising also includes branded content on The Times' platforms. Classified advertising includes line advertisements sold in the categories of real estate, help wanted, automotive and other. In print, classified advertisers pay on a per-line basis. On its Web and mobile platforms, classified advertisers pay on a per-listing basis either for bundled listing packages or as an add-on to their print advertising. Other advertising primarily includes creative services fees associated with its branded content studio.
The Company's other businesses include Times news services division, NYT Live business, Wirecutter and The Sweethome, and digital archive distribution. As of December 31, 2016, Times news services division transmitted articles, graphics and photographs from The Times and other publications to approximately 2,000 newspapers, magazines and Websites in over 100 countries and territories around the world. It also includes various other businesses that primarily include its online retail store, product licensing, news digests, book development and rights and permissions. The Company's NYT Live business is a platform for its live journalism and convenes thought leaders from business, academia and government at conferences and events to discuss topics ranging from education to sustainability to the luxury business. The Wirecutter and The Sweethome, product review and recommendation Websites serve as a guide to technology gear, home products and other consumer goods. Digital archive distribution licenses electronic archive databases to resellers of that information in the business, professional and library markets.
