Tens of thousands of Egyptians gather in Cairo's Tahrir Square demanding faster reforms and the swifter prosecution of former officials from Hosni Mubarak's toppled government. Most political groups and parties including the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's most organised political grouping, backed calls for the protest to be staged across Egypt. Demonstrations took place across the country, including Alexandria and Suez. Activists say the interim government is too slow to punish officials blamed for the killing of hundreds of protesters during the uprising, and say the police are still too unaccountable. (SOUNDBITE)(Arabic) PROTESTER, MANAL: "We are protesting today because we have not yet reaped the benefits of the revolution. The things that the revolution was founded on have not been realised. The president has not been tried. Economic life has not begun to develop. Nor have the martyrs been given their rights. The situation is static. There is laziness, and no real efforts have been made to achieve the aims of the revolution." People are furious that Mubarak is being detained in a hospital in Sharm al-Sheikh, in what they say is luxury, whilst awaiting trial on August 3rd. They chant, "The people want the death for the dog Habib" - referring to Habib al-Adly, the former Interior Minister. They're demanding the punishment of police officers who used violence against protesters, the resignation of government officials who have failed to deliver on their revolutionary promises, and the end of military trials for civilians.
