Clashes in Chile's capital Santiago. Protesters hurl petrol bombs at security forces, who respond by firing paint balls, water cannon and tear gas. The violence comes two days ahead of the 39th anniversary of the 1973 coup that toppled the government of Salvador Allende and brought Augusto Pinochet to power. The masked protesters turned out to commemorate the victims of Pinochet's brutal dictatorship. The event began as a march from the city's Plaza of Heroes to the main cemetery, and included victims' family members, human rights activists and political and civic organisations. Pinochet ruled Chile with an iron fist for 17 years. During his reign more than 3,000 people were killed or disappeared, and an estimated 28,000 people were tortured. He died in 2006 without facing a full trial for his crimes.
