Thursday, April 11, 2013 - 01:26
Fred Wilson, co-founder of Union Square Ventures, says he hopes the FCC won't sell all of the spectrum it gets back from TV stations. Deregulation of it would spur technological advances in mobile communications.

Okay. The FCC is. Thinking about what to do with a lot of the white space that they are gonna get back from the television broadcast -- And we would prefer. That it doesn't all get auctioned off to the wireless carriers at the highest price and what we what we would prefer to see happen is we prefer to see that. White space be. Deregulated. The weighted Bluetooth spectrum and Wi-Fi spectrum is to anybody can operate in the -- spend those were deregulated one point that they penalize those technologies exist exactly. And so would be wonderful if that's spectrum. Where are treated the way that Wi-Fi is instead of being auctioned off to the highest bidder just given to. Society to innovate in and create. New wireless communication technologies down at SXSW. We and a few other like minded people funded something called. We heart Wi-Fi and we took Wi-Fi access points and connected them to the Internet via super Wi-Fi which is operating in this unregulated spectrum. And made Wi-Fi portable because the wireless access points to -- moved around because -- they weren't hard wired to the Internet they were wirelessly -- wired to the Internet. And we we made a -- -- wireless access points available for free during SXSW. And and you know got a lot of attention around that.
