Aug. 14 - About 18 sailors are trapped or have died after an explosion and fire on board an Indian submarine, the defence minister said. Sophia Soo reports.

The explosion went off in the early hours of Wednesday, when the submarine was berthed off Mumbai city. Defence minister said crew members inside the vessel have died, but gave no details. Navy officials said the explosion is likely an accident. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DEFENCE EXPERT AND FORMER DIRECTOR, NATIONAL MARITIME FOUNDATION, UDAY BHASKAR, SAYING: "The Sindhurakshak today is perhaps the worst accident that the Indian navy's submarine arm has ever had." Photos showed the vessel half-submerged after the fire. Rescue work is underway to reach the people trapped inside.
