Demonstrators made heart shapes with their hands, blew kisses and drew rainbow flags onto the ground at the peaceful rally near Sydney's Taylor Square. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott's sister, Liberal councillor Christine Forster, attended the rally with her partner Virginia Edwards, and called for bi-partisan agreement on the issue. "We need to take the politics out of it now. It's too important to too many people to play political games with something like marriage equality," Forster said. The leader of Australia's opposition Labor Party introduced a bill to legalise same-sex marriage on Monday (June 1), adding the backing of a major party to growing public support for the issue after last month's landmark 'yes' vote in Ireland. Labor Party leader Bill Shorten introduced the bill in the government-dominated lower house of parliament despite opposition from conservative Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who is not expected to allow it to come up for a vote. Abbott, a socially conservative Catholic, said on Monday (June 1) morning that the government did not want a vote on same-sex marriage, Australian media reported. In June last year, a survey of 1,000 Australians, conducted by polling agency Crosby-Textor, found support for legalising it at 72 percent. Ireland last month backed same-sex marriage by a landslide in a referendum that marked a dramatic social shift in a traditionally Catholic country.
