French riot police chase out striking ferry workers

Protesters set fire to tires and blockade a road to the Calais port and Channel Tunnel until being forcibly removed by police. Vanessa Johnston reports.

Planted in the middle of the road en route to the Calais port... ...striking ferry workers break out in the French national anthem...before riot police lose their patience. The protesters tried other tactics too...like burning tires on the railroad. They're angry over job cuts by their employer -- the MyFerryLink company. Eric Vercoutre is the union leader. (SOUNDBITE) (French) UNION LEADER, ERIC VERCOUTRE, SAYING: "It's important to continue to give a positive image as we have done for the past three years. We were considered as as alcoholics and lazy, but we showed what we were able to do with our ships..." But the strike was a headache for travelers. Both maritime traffic and Eurotunnel's undersea rail link with Britain were disrupted. And Britain's Foreign Office warned that migrants in Calais could take advantage of the traffic jam... ...and climb into vehicles waiting to enter the UK-bound tunnel. Hundreds of port workers reportedly participated in the strike...before being chased out by police.
