ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: U.S. Senator Charles Schumer is becoming increasingly optimistic as he presses the case for hearings for Merrick Garland, the nominee of U.S. President Barack Obama to become the next justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Schumer said 12 Republicans senators have already agreed to meet with Judge Garland. "The list of those willing to meet is growing every week," he said. "Every day the playing field tilts more and more against Senate Republican leadership, momentum is on the side of having hearings," Schumer said. "Every day, the odds that Judge Garland will become Justice Garland ticks upward," he said. He said the confirmation battle would not be won in a matter of days, "but as the American people, and Republican senators hear more about this fine man, and his sterling credentials, our republican friends will come around," he said. The Republicans, led by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Charles Grassley, refuse to allow Garland nomination to come to a vote on the Senate floor as they hope that delay tactics will place the court vacancy in the hands of a new Republican president. Garland, a centrist appellate judge and former prosecutor, was picked last week to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, who died February 13. His appointment could tip the court leftward for the first time in decades.
