Military forces deployed to a prison in northern India where inmates had seized control. Officials said the riots in the state of Uttar Pradesh began after prisoners alleged that police had beaten up one of their fellow inmates. Officials also said the inmates began throwing rocks and beating prison officials, severely injuring some of them. Sounds of gunfire were also heard although police deny any firing. Officials said inmates seized control of one section of the prison, locking themselves up from the inside and taking the jail superintendent hostage. Armed forces were working to bring the situation under control.
