Hit hip hop musical "Hamilton" swept the board at the Tony awards. The show, based on the life of America's founding father Alexander Hamilton, took home 11 of Broadway's top honours, including best musical and best score. But the usually upbeat ceremony struck a somber note with many winners and performers paying tribute to the victims of the Orlando club shooting. SOUNDBITE: Tony Awards host, James Corden, saying (English): "Theatre is a place where every race, creed, sexuality, gender is equal, is embraced and is loved. Hate will never win. Together, we have to make sure of that. Tonight's show stands as a symbol and a celebration of that principle." Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of "Hamilton", called for love rather than hate. SOUNDBITE: "Hamilton" creator and actor, Lin-Manuel Miranda, saying (English): "The show is proof that history remembers. We live through times when hate and fear seemed stronger. We rise and fall and light from dying embers - remembrances that hope and love last longer. Love is love is love is love - cannot be killed or swept aside." Other winners included "The Color Purple" and veteran actors Jessica Lange and Frank Langella. The awards certainly did celebrate everybody, and in a year when the Oscars drew criticism for lacking non-white nominees, the Tonys celebrated everything but uniformity. James Corden even joked that the awards were "like the Oscars - but with diversity."
