The name Clare Maguire may well ring a bell. Six years back, the British singer-songwriter was hotly tipped for superstardom. But her debut album, stripped of its essence by label executives, subsequently failed to meet the hype. SOUNDBITE (English) SINGER-SONGWRITER CLARE MAGUIRE, SAYING: "Everything was very big and shiny and glossy whereas this time it's a lot more sort of not that, which is kind of, it's the opposite of that really, which is more me, I guess." Some dark years followed, culminating with Maguire checking into rehab with an alcohol addiction. Now sober, she returns with her sophomore record, "Stranger Things have Happened". SOUNDBITE (English) SINGER-SONGWRITER CLARE MAGUIRE, SAYING: "All the songs on the album are influenced by my experience, and my experience is, you know, being an addict and being alone in London and relationships ... I've been able to understand my thoughts, process my thoughts, and my emotions really, which I wasn't able to do when I was an addict because I was suppressing it all." The video for her comeback single 'Elizabeth Taylor' was directed by model and actress of the moment, Suki Waterhouse. SOUNDBITE (English) SINGER-SONGWRITER CLARE MAGUIRE, SAYING: "The guy who produced my record called Blue, he sent me some music that she'd done and didn't tell me it was her and was like "What do you think about this?" and I was like, "It's amazing", he was like "it's Suki Waterhouse, do you want to do some writing sessions with her?" So I was like, "ok" so I went to her flat and we did about two or three weeks' writing." "Stranger Things Have Happened" is out now and Maguire will be performing at festivals across the UK this summer.
