Erdogan says Turkey will shut down military academies and put armed forces under the command of the defense minister, in a move designed to bring the military under tighter government control. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

A show of support for Turkish President Tayipp Erdogan in Germany as tensions over Turkey's failed coup put German authorities on edge. The Cologne police braced for tens of thousands, organizers expect many more. The demonstration became the focus of increasingly strained ties between Germany and Turkey after a decision by Germany's top court on its eve prevented Erdogan from addressing the meeting via videoconference. Meanwhile in Ankara Erdogan is vowing more reforms -- shutting down military academies and putting armed forces under the command of the defense minister-- moves that will put the military under tighter government control. (SOUNDBITE) (Turkish) TURKISH PRESIDENT, TAYYIP ERDOGAN, SAYING: "With the closure of the military schools, students from all high schools and vocational schools will be able to enroll in the military academy. But the military academy will be under an umbrella institution. We will build a National Defense University and land, naval and air forces academies will be under the national defense university." Erdogan is also upset at Western leaders for not visiting after the coup attempt, as he continues a shakeup at home.
