ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION The migrant thriller "Desierto" (Desert) premiered in Los Angeles on Tuesday (October 11) as immigration remains a heated issue during the upcoming U.S. presidential election. And with Mexico now selecting the film as its official Academy Awards entry in the best foreign language film category it finds itself as a talking point in the discussion on immigration. "Desierto" relies on gripping action to send a sharp message about heated rhetoric sowing the seeds of violence, but the film's director and writer, Jonas Cuaron said he also wanted to send a wider message about migration. In the film, Gael Garcia Bernal's character, Moises is a Mexican seeking a better life past the U.S. border, pursued by the murderous vigilante Sam, played by Morgan. The odds are stacked firmly against the migrants as they continuously discover there's nowhere to hide from the unrelenting killer. For actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, It's unavoidable not to talk about immigration on a film about the border, a heated point of conversation during the presidential election. He says Trump's posture on immigration is offensive. "Desierto" opens in North American theaters on October 14, 2016.
