Rohingya Muslims in the Maungdaw district of Myanmar say this destruction is the work of government troops. But the damage goes much further than physical destruction of homes. They say dozens of women were raped and sexually assaulted. The woman speaking here - we're not showing her to protect her identity - says her clothes were torn off, she was restrained and raped by a group of men. She says her 15-year-old daughter was also attacked. They're among eight women in a single remote village who say they were assaulted. Troops have been pouring into the Maungdaw district since early October. They're hunting Rohingya insurgents they believe are linked to foreign Islamists behind deadly raids on border guard posts. A border guard official is rejecting the rape allegations as rumours which keep cropping up but couldn't have taken place in fact. Official reports say 33 alleged attackers have been killed, a figure disputed by residents and activists who say many more people have lost their lives. The military hasn't responded to emailed requests for comment about the allegations. The crackdown in northern Rakhine state is the biggest challenge yet faced by Myanmar's recently-elected civilian government. It also raises questions about the ability of de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi to keep control over the military.
