India's Supreme Court on Tuesday, gave the federal government 48 hours to come up with a national plan to combat the capital's worst pollution in nearly two decades. Mana Rabiee reports.

48 hours. That's how long India's Supreme Court gave the federal government to come up with a national plan to combat the capital's worst pollution in nearly two decades. The court was answering to demands by environmental groups seeking its intervention. Including one headed by Sunita Narain. (SOUNDBITE) (English) HEAD OF CENTRE FOR SCIENCE AND ENVIRONMENT, SUNITA NARAIN, SAYING: "What is your common minimum graded response to a pollution emergency? That's what the chief justice wants the union government to come up with. Dangerous pollution levels in New Delhi for nearly two weeks already have local authorities taking action. They started revoking licenses for thousands of older diesel vehicles on Tuesday, a move that could take some 200,000 vehicles off the city's roads. City authorities have to come up with a master plan by Wednesday but many of Delhi's 17 million people are already angry that more measures weren't taken sooner.
