The last two performers standing in TV music contest 'Afghan Star'. Barber-turned-rapper Sayed Jamal Mubarez. And the first ever female finalist in the competition's history - 18-year old singer Zulala Hashimi. The young artist defied widespread attitudes against women performers to make it to the last round. In the end it was Sayed Jamal who won the Afghan talent show. The rapping barber is part of Afghanistan's persecuted Hazara minority. He captured the audiences hearts with lyrics about living through the long-running war against the Taliban. (SOUNDBITE) Winner of the afghan star music show, Sayed Jamal Mubarez, saying (Dari) : "I am so happy to win the first prize in Afghan Star. I would have been happy if Zulala had won it because women in Afghanistan live in a restricted situation so it is a pride for her that she had made it to be a finalist." Despite losing out in the competition his female challenger managed to inspire other young women. (SOUNDBITE) Shabnam Mehri, Spectator of Afghan Star music show; saying (Dari) : "This was the first time that a lady reached to final so I came here because of Zulala and wanted to see her face to face." "Afghan Star" singing competition is in its 12th season on Afghanistan's biggest private television network Tolo. Now that Zulala has pioneered her way to the final - the 13th season could see more Afghani women take part.
