Big multinationals issued warnings to ensure they have access to Europe as Britain formally began its divorce proceedings from the European Union Wednesday. Ford Motor urged Britain to ensure that any Brexit deal it secures will offer tariff-free trade with the wider customs union, not just the 27 EU nations. In addition to building engines in Britain and cars in Germany, Ford makes trucks in Turkey, which is not part of the EU but is in the EU customs union. Irish airline Ryanair said flights between Britain and the EU could be suspended if London doesn't prioritize a new aviation deal. Goldman Sachs' contingency plan calls for moving hundreds of staff out of London. It reassured its London staff in a voicemail Wednesday that despite some changes, the investment bank will continue to operate much as it does today.
