Personal data risks after cyber hack, warns Wonga

British lender Wonga has warned customers in Britain and Poland that their personal data may have been stolen in the latest major corporate security breach. Laura Frykberg reports.

A major security breach, at British lender Wonga. Putting at risk the personal data of hundreds of thousands of its customers in the UK and Poland.. Both past and present. Including their home addresses and bank accounts. (SOUNDBITE) (English) GLOBAL FINANCIAL ECONOMIST, COMMERZBANK, PETER DIXON, SAYING: "It's an inevitable consequence of the increasingly digital world in which we live, that there will occasionally be data breaches. I think the question is just to what extensive can firms limit them." The company says it detected the hack last Tuesday But wasn't aware it impacted customer's data till several days later. It's now investigating what went wrong, and how to stop it happening again. Although perhaps that's a battle the firm will never win. (SOUNDBITE) (English) GLOBAL FINANCIAL ECONOMIST, COMMERZBANK, PETER DIXON, SAYING: "Hackers only have to get lucky once, but firms have to maintain a 100 percent security record in order to prevent the problems." Other British business to be targeted by a cyber attack... Include, Tesco Bank, Lloyds and Talk-Talk... in its case the breach cost it a record fine - of 400,000 pounds.
