UK exports strong, uncertainty ahead - survey

British manufacturers reported the fastest export growth in more than two years in early 2017 and the services sector also recovered to rack up its strongest sales growth since last June's Brexit vote, a survey showed on Thursday. As Laura Frykberg reports, it comes amid other data which point to new vulnerabilities in consumer demand and real wage growth.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FIDELITY INTERNATIONAL, INVESTMENT DIRECTOR, TOM STEVENSON, SAYING: "The UK economy has enjoyed a bit of a honeymoon period since the referendum in the middle of last year and I think that's taken many people by surprise." British consumers appear to be hungry too despite their Brexit vote. Sales in the service sector have been at their strongest since then. Although there's a lot which could eventually spoil their appetite. (SOUNDBITE) (English) FIDELITY INTERNATIONAL, INVESTMENT DIRECTOR, TOM STEVENSON, SAYING: "We are seeing a rise in inflation in the UK because of the fall in the pound, import costs are rising, and at the same time household earnings are not growing particularly fast." Evident, in figures released yesterday by the Office of National Statistics. In the three months to February - total earnings including bonuses were up by an annual 2.3 percent. Prices also rising by the same amount in the twelve months to March.
