Aldi will begin delivering groceries in three U.S. cities. The German grocery chain is teaming up with San Francisco's Instacart. Starting their pilot at the end of August, they'll allow shoppers to order goods from Aldi stores using Instacart's website and app. Instacart will pick up orders from the store and get them to a customer's doorstep in as little as one hour. Instacart charges a delivery fee. Some traditional American retailers rely on Instacart for deliveries. Clients include Target, Costco and Whole Foods, which will be acquired by e-commerce giant Amazon.com. Amazon runs Amazon Fresh, which delivers groceries. The Food Marketing Institute forecasts that online grocery spending will quintuple to as much as 20 percent of U.S. food and beverage sales by 2025. Aldi's move comes amid an intense price war. This summer, its German rival Lidl began opening the first of 100 stores in the U.S. Aldi plans to invest more than $3 billion to expand its store base in the U.S. to 2,500 in five years.
