ROUGH CUT. NO REPORTER NARRATION. Croatian firefighters battled fierce forest fires breaking out along the country's Adriatic coast on Tuesday (August 22). Helped by some 100 soldiers and army aircraft, firefighters struggled all night to contain several fires in central Dalmatia in forested areas around the cities of Zadar and Sibenik. Near the towns of Benkovac and Drnis the blaze threatened houses and buildings, its spread helped by strong winds, with access made difficult due to pockets of uncleared minefields left over from the 1991-95 war. The blaze came dangerously close to the country's main highway linking the country's capital Zagreb to its second largest city Split, promoting authorities to close off sections of the road. No casualties have been reported, but this summer's forest fire season is one of the worst in recent years, with dozens of fires breaking out in record high temperatures and destroying more than 80,000 hectares of forested area.
