Martin Winterkorn was an early casualty of the Volkswagen emissions scandal Stepping down as CEO less than a week after the news first broke. That was September the 23rd, 2015. It's now emerged Winterkorn may have known about the cheating as much as two months before then - contradicting the company's earlier statements. VW previously said its executive board didn't know about the emissions test cheating until late August that year. But according to German media, a former senior manager has told investigators he informed Winterkorn about it at the end of July. VW has declined to comment on the report. The company's already being sued by investors for withholding market sensitive information, which it denies. But this will only raise yet more questions, over who knew what and when.
