Shock election poll pulls down NZ dollar

The New Zealand dollar has dropped to a three-month low, after an election poll put the centre-left opposition party ahead of the incumbent centre-right National party. Laura Frykberg reports.

It's been dubbed by New Zealand media... As 'Jacindamania'.. The effect the new opposition Labour party leader.. Is having on the nation. (SOUNDBITE) (English) NEW ZEALAND OPPOSITION LEADER, JACINDA ARDERN, SAYING: "I want to build a country where every child grows up free from poverty and is filled with hope and opportunity." Now, for the first time, it's spread to the numbers.. A new poll putting Labour IN FRONT of the ruling centre-right National party... Which has held power for nine years. The 37-year-old is popular with the youth vote... With policies including three years of free tertiary education.. from 2021. And tackling New Zealand's housing crisis. NEW ZEALAND PRIME MINISTER, BILL ENGLISH SAYING: "Housing affordability is better than 2008" (SOUNDBITE) (English) LABOUR LEADER, JACINDA ARDERN SAYING: "Tell someone in Auckland that 150,000 dollars for a deposit is acceptable..." The shock poll has pulled National down to its lowest result since 2005. Taking with it - the New Zealand dollar to a three-month low. But if recent world events are anything to go by.. Nothing is certain... The election is just over three weeks away.. And anything could happen in that time.. Just seven days ago it was National tipped to win it..
