High-tech household gets star billing at IFA fair

The world's biggest consumer electronics fair opens on Friday in Berlin. Laura Frykberg has preview of what people can expect.

It's a big job, setting up the venue.. for the world's largest consumer electronics fair... But once again...the Berlin IFA is drawing big crowds. The event is fully booked. (SOUNDBITE) (German) IFA DIRECTOR, JENS HEIDTHECKER, SAYING: "There are over 1,800 exhibitors and an expected 240,000 visitors making it not only the world's largest fair of its kind but also the most international." This year, it's making our lives at home easier.. That retailers are focussing on. From an oven designed to make better food. (SOUNDBITE) (German) MIELE STAND REPRESENTATIVE, MARKUS DOECKE, SAYING: "A conventional oven cooks roast beef from the outside in, in a dialogue cooker we cook in volume, it means you get the meat tender and pink from the middle to the outside." To fridges that do more than just keep Your groceries cool. (SOUNDBITE) (German) LIEBHERR STAND REPRESENTATIVE, NAME UNKNOWN, SAYING: "When you shut the door, the camera takes a picture and shows this in the App. So when I am shopping I know what is in my fridge and this makes planning my recipes much easier." The event is attracting well-known brands too. Samsung is showcasing its S pen smartphone.. With the novel ideal of letting users WRITE message. All of it may seem superfluous to some... But the figures suggest to many others it doesn't... Spending on consumer electronics is expected to reach 887 billion euros this year. a four percent rise on 2016
