ROUGH CUT. NO REPORTER NARRATION. French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday (September 7) chose Athens' symbolic Pnyx Hill, believed to be the place where democracy was born, to make a speech calling for a braver Europe with stronger governance and sovereignty. Macron cautioned against a "death of Europe" at the hands of the current generation, saying the EU should show more humility and accountability. The President called for a euro zone finance minister and parliament, as well as a stand-alone budget, but he is running into German resistance. In earlier meetings with Greek leaders, Macron said he backed Germany's idea of a European Monetary Fund (EMF), but said the ultimate goal of deeper integration should remain a euro zone budget.
