North Korean skaters may qualify for Winter Olympics

RYOM AND KIM EMBRACING AFTER PERFORMANCE STORY: Ice skating pair Ryom Tae-Ok and Kim Ju-Sik are bidding to become North Korea's only representatives at the 2018 Winter Olympics in neighbouring South Korea as they compete at the Nebelhorn-Trophy in Obersdorf. The pair produced a solid performance in the Short Program on Thursday (September 28), scoring 60.19 points, which is enough for fifth place. Russians Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov are leading on 77.52 points. Ryom and Kim must finish in the top four to qualify for Pyeongchang 2018 after two days of competition. They are the only North Koreans with any hope of qualifying for any winter games event. There will be another day of competition on Friday (September 29) in the Free Skating. South Korean President Moon Jae-in said in July the North will be given until the last minute to decide whether it will take part in the Olympics. None of its athletes have yet met the qualification standards.
