AERIAL VIEW OF DONGFENG LEADING THE FLEET OUT INTO THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA STORY: The start of the Volvo Ocean Race from Alicante on Sunday (October 22) saw a fleet of seven 22-metre yachts sailing back and forth in front of the port before heading out across the Mediterranean for the Atlantic Ocean. The yachts were racing fiercely from the start in gusts of 20 knots and more with no backing down. There was a spectacular near miss as two entrants, Turn the Tide on Plastic and Team Hun Sung Kai/Scallywag, carved their way through a cluster of spectator boats while racing hard. Turn the Tide on Plastic missed one boat by what appeared less than a metre. After rounding five marks in front of the city the fleet set off on leg one of the race, heading for Gibraltar and the Atlantic Ocean before nearing the Island of Madeira and ending the leg in Lisbon. The race is in 11 legs with the final one due to start in June 2018. Among the ports visited will be Hong Kong, Melbourne, Guangzhou and Auckland. Dongfeng Race Team (China) leads the fleet in the Mediterranean ahead of Mapfre (Spain), Vestas 11th Hour Racing (Sweden/USA), Team AkzoNobel (Netherlands), Turn the Tide on Plastic (United Nations), Team Hun Sung Kai/Scallywag (Hong Kong) and Team Brunel (Netherlands).
