A tighter grip for China's Xi Jinping. The president's political thought enshrined into the Communist Party's constitution on Tuesday (October 24), putting the leader on par with Mao Zedong, the founder of modern China. The party unanimously passed the amendment to include so-called 'Xi Jinping Thought' as one of its guiding principles, marking the end of its pivotal week-long congress. The five-yearly summit was opened with a three hour speech by Xi, who introduced his thoughts on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. The symbolic move to include Xi's name in the constitution had been widely seen as a key measure of his power. No other leader since Mao has had their name attached to their ideology in the constitution while in office. The news comes a day ahead of a top leadership line up, when the new seven-man standing committee, the apex of power in the country, is unveiled.
