Oscar Pistorius's prison sentence has more than doubled. (SOUNDBITE) (English) COURT JUSTICE LEGOABE WILLIE SERTI, SAYING: "Sentenced to imprisonment for a period of 13 years and nine months." South Africa's Supreme Court handing down the new judgment on Friday (November 24). That, after the government successfully argued the former athlete's original punishment of six years for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was, quote, "shockingly lenient." Pistorius wasn't present for the ruling. Civil rights groups have for years criticized the original verdicts in the case. Once a paralympic star, they say Pistorius received preferential treatment by virtue of being a white celebrity. He was first convicted of manslaughter for firing four shots through his locked bathroom door in 2013, killing Steenkamp as she huddled inside. That was later increased to a six year murder sentence in 2015. The judge at the time stating that while Steenkamp's family had suffered, so did Pistorius' life and career. Steenkamp's family has welcomed the new ruling. Pistorius' lawyers maintain that Steenkamp's death was unintentional.
