Tennis-Chakvetadze in top gear, Golovin injured at Linz Open
LINZ Oct 24 (Reuters) - Top seed Anna Chakvetadze reached the quarter-finals of the Linz Open on Wednesday with a crushing 6-0 6-2 victory over Italy's Francesca Schiavone.
French teenager Tatiana Golovin limped out of her match with Greek Eleni Daniilidou after trailing by a set.
She had looked weary in the first set against her hard-hitting opponent, and had to save a break point to hold for 1-0 in the second.
Then, leading 40-0 on Daniilidou's serve in the next game, Golovin slipped as she approached the net and requested medical attention for her ankle.
After playing the next four points Golovin required more treatment, this time to her right knee, and then retired.
The injury brought to an end a run that since the U.S. Open had seen her reach the finals of Stuttgart and Zurich, winning 15 of 18 matches.
"I just slipped running for a drop shot and felt like I twisted my ankle," said Golovin, who has suffered two serious ankle injuries in the last 18 months.
"Then I think with that my knee went as well. I tried to continue my play but I couldn't extend my knee afterwards. Right now I'm a little bit under shock, because anything that happens to my ankle I'm very sensitive to because of everything that happened before."
Fourth seed Dinara Safina eased by Italian qualifier Karin Knapp 6-2 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals, but fifth seed Nicole Vaidisova struggled to beat recent Bangkok champion Flavia Pennetta of Italy, edging through 4-6 6-3 7-6 in a first round battle.
The Czech failed to find any rhythm or consistency, and although she served for the match at 5-4 she dropped her serve to love before taking the tiebreak 7-4.
"I think she played a great match and stepped up her game," said Vaidisova. "I was a little tired today and had a lot of unforced errors but was able to pull it out and that's what co
Austrian Tamira Paszek, 16, earned a second round meeting with third seed Marion Bartoli of France by beating Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3 7-5.
