Libya's only working nuclear reactor is now in the hands of the ruling interim council. The director of the facility says they are vetting workers one by one to make sure nuclear matter doesn't fall into the wrong hands. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ALAHASHMI ALABYAD, SAYING: "We cannot open the centre to everybody here because we don't know their intentions. Some people may be related to the Gaddafi regime. We are selecting some people to come in, not everybody.'' Nuclear waste is stored near the research centre but the alarm system on the fence doesn't work. Staff keep an eye on things using CCTV cameras. Muammar Gaddafi's regime built military compounds near the facility which were bombed by NATO, but damage to the facility itself was limited to broken windows. When it became clear last month that Gaddafi was defeated the director asked the rebels for security. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR OF THE NUCLEAR RESEARCH CENTRE, ALAHASHMI ALABYAD, SAYING: "On the 22nd, late on the 22nd, at evening we brought, after the withdrawal of the Gaddafi forces from the area, we brought the revolutionary people, who came in to secure the place. We asked them to come and secure the place." The main concern now is that any power vacuum or political infighting leaves the installation vulnerable to looting. Lily Grimes, Reuters
