Amateur video out of Syria shows soldiers gathered around a pick up truck in a southwestern town amid the sound of gunfire. The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters comes as the United Nations is warning that the country is in a civil war. More footage, purportedly shot in a town near Aleppo shows demonstrators back on the streets calling for an end of President Bashar al Assad's regime. Video from Homs shows a funeral march. The United Nations says some 4,000 people have been killed in Syria since the uprising began in March. Syria is facing increased economic sanctions and condemnation from many governments over what the UN calls "gross human rights violations". On Thursday Syrian Television aired footage of Assay hosting a delegation of muslim scholars from Lebanon. Lebanon, which has close ties with Syria, voted against the Arab League sanctions announced Sunday. State TV also aired footage on Wednesday showing people who were detained for protests being released from prison. The government said more than 900 people were released. Syria has banned most independent from the country making it difficult to verify accounts from activists or the government. Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters.
