Dec. 15 - At least 27 Syrian security forces are reportedly killed by army deserters as violence continues -- raising civil war fears. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

WARNING -- STORY CONTAINS GRAPHIC IMAGES Amateur video out of Syria shows an empty streets in Deraa with the sound of gunfire. The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters shows wounded men on the street. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says clashes have flared in the southern city amid reports that army deserters killed 27 soldiers. Casualties among security forces suggest coordinated strikes by the army rebels, raising fears Syria is slipping towards civil war. A Human Rights Watch report released Thursday said Syrian army commanders have ordered troops to use "all means necessary" to halt protests. Footage purportedly from Hama shows demonstrators back on the streets calling for an end of President Bashar al-Assad's regime. They chant "The people want to execute you Bashar" Footage out of Damascus shows a funeral procession. The United Nations says more than 5,000 people have been killed in Syria since the uprising began in March. Assad has denied any orders were issued to kill demonstrators and says gunmen have killed 1,100 of his forces. Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters.
