ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Actress Melissa McCarthy turns into an action hero for her new film "Spy." The cast of movie hit the red carpet in Austin, Texas to show off their work to audiences at SXSW in Austin, Texas on Sunday (March 15). In "Spy," due out in U.S. theaters on June 5, McCarthy plays low-level CIA employee Susan Cooper, tasked with helping the hot-shot agents on their missions. But when her partner goes missing, Susan decides to engage her spy training and go on the hunt for him. On the red carpet McCarthy said she found her inner action hero. The film also stars Jason Statham, rapper 50 Cent, Alison Janney and Jude Law. A mini "Bridesmaids" reunion is also had with actress Rose Byrne and director Paul Feig, who called McCarthy his comedic twin. Once again, Byrne teams up with her real-life boyfriend, Bobby Cannavale, after sharing the screen in the remake of "Annie" and "Adult Beginners," which is also premiering at the festival. The inspiration for "Spy" came from Feig's love of the most prolific spy franchise, Ian Fleming's James Bond, specifically, he said, when he saw actor Daniel Craig's rendition of Bond in 2006's "Casino Royale." These essentials, combined with McCarthy's comedic timing is reason enough to see the film, said Cannavale. SXSW is in its 30th year and is broken up into film, interactive and music segments. Many visitors use the festival as a time to relax and party, as McCarthy found out while conducting red carpet interviews. The film segment of the festival will run from March 13-21.
